Crime Stat Update

The discussion on sachink's mugging story last night made me realize that it was past time to put all of the individual crime information into the big-picture. The official stats appear to support people's feelings, showing that robberies such as the one reported in that story are up significantly so far this year. Other categories of crime are up more modestly, with the one exception of vehicle thefts which are way down.

Here's the neighborhood crime stats through September of this year (October numbers won't be available for a couple more weeks):

  • Total Crime: Up 2% this year vs. the same period in 2008
  • Assault: Up 9%
  • Robbery: Up 44%
  • Burglaries: Up 4%
  • Theft: Up 4%
  • Vehicle Thefts: Down 42%

Here's the graphs with more details:

Total crimes in the Central District since January 2008:

Total crimes per beat - see the precinct map to connect it to your area

Breakout of crimes in September 2009 vs 2008:

Breakout of crimes per beat in September 2009 vs. September 2008 - see the precinct map to connect it to your area

Confused about numbers and graphs
Your numbers I realize are annual increase:
Robbery: Up 44%
Burglaries: Up 4%

The graph showing Sept 08 vs. Sept 09 looks like:
Robbery: Up 5%
Burglaries: Up 100%

I realize the numbers are annual and the graph is month-of-September-year-to-year comparison, so it's possible all of the displayed data is correct. But it makes me wonder if Robberies/Burglaries got swapped somewhere in Excel, too.

RE: Confused about numbers and graphs
You're correct that the stats cited in text are year-to-date, while the two bar graphs are September 2008 vs. September 2009. We'll work on a couple of new charts that are year-to-date to make it less confusing.

data
The graphs refer to Greater Central District, what are the boundaries of the "Greater Central District" of which they are collecting data?

RE: data
I assumed it was the area represented by the 4 beats combined (detailed on the precinct map). My guess, anyway.

RE: data
The police beats don't neatly match neighborhood boundaries, so the stats above include beats G1, G2, G3, and C3. Those include all of the Central District, Madrona, Leschi, Madison Valley, Montlake, and Madison Park.

it's easy.....
Robbery is where they take stuff directly from you - a mugging, for example.

Burglary is where they break into your house and maybe they take something, maybe not. The key is that they broke in.

Theft is where they take something - like from their burglary, or maybe from your car.
